Salt Lake City is not only the state capital of Utah, but it is also the political and cultural center of the state. With a population over 1.3 million people, it is also the largest city in Utah. Although more than a million people call the metro SLC area home, it remains a quiet and peaceful place to live.

Situated at the base of the Wasatch Mountain range, Salt Lake City enjoys beautiful, sunny weather, averaging 237 days of sun shine a year with a low 15% average humidity. Beautiful weather and beautiful views are always a great combination!

There are many great places to visit in the city here. One of the local tourist spots include Mormon Temple Square and the Place Monument. In the city you can also enjoy Hogle Zoo, or the Utah Museum of Fine Arts. It is the home of many fine arts, for instance the Repertory Dance Theatre and Mormon Tabernacle Choir and also the Utah Symphony.

With the mountains on one side and the Great Salt Lake on the other, locals and tourists alike can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. As for outdoors sports, in the summer you can play on the lake with sports like water skiing, boating, fishing and swimming. During the winter, you’ll find out why we can claim “The Greatest Snow on Earth.” In fact, there are 14 major ski resorts less than an hours drive from Salt Lake City.

Several professional sports teams also call SLC home. The Real Salt Lake, Utah Jazz, Utah Grizzlies and the Salt Lake Bees all make their home right here. Since being the host of the Olympic games in 2002, our city has continued to thrive in the field of sports.

The city also holds the distinction of having the highest percentage of college graduates as well as the highest percentage of high school graduates in the country. When you visit Utah, you’ll soon see why. Home to Brigham Young University and the University of Utah, education in general is a high priority for the city.

Over all, Salt Lake City is a really great place to live and to visit. It has just about everything that you would want in a location. It’s big enough to offer the perks of city life, yet western at the same time. It’s beautiful and tranquil at the same time. If you are looking for a nice place to relocate, be sure to check us out!

Question by : What is the best area to live in Salt Lake City, UT?
My wife and I are relocating to Salt Lake City, UT and are searching for a fitting place to call our new home. We have no children, interested in outdoor activities, enjoy eating out, shopping, and are in the market for around $ 250,000. We would prefer to be on the west side of the mountains as opposed to the Park City area. Additionally we would like to be no further than 20 miles from SLC city center.
Please provide suggestions and ration why you’re suggestions fit the demands. Thanks for you’re input!

Generally speaking I would recommend you find a place close to where you will be working. There are a few spots that I would stay away from. I wouldn’t live anywhere in the area between Redwood Rd to the west and 700 E to the east – 2100 S to the south and north to the border of the city.

The only exception is up by the Capitol but homes up there are quite expensive. And east of 700 E the neighborhoods are nice. Downtown itself is nice with Symphony Hall, Capitol Theater, the event center where the Jazz play, malls, restaurants, etc. but you get away from that and the homes are not nice.

Most of the suburbs have small neighborhoods that are older and run down. The only two that have larger areas like that are West Valley City and Midvale. You’ll know these areas when you see them. It’s not like they’re total ghettos but I wouldn’t want to live there.

Personally I live north of downtown SL almost exactly 20 miles in Kaysville and we love it up here. We lived in Murray and West Valley for 15 years before we moved up here and we would never go back. It’s sort of like the small town I grew up in but nearly anything I want is within a 10-15 min drive. There’s a passenger train that runs to downtown SL when we want to see a play, concert or a game.

I highly recommend Farmington or Kaysville. Layton’s much larger and is mostly nice but is big enough to have a run down neighborhood or two. I would stay away from Bountiful and Centerville – they’re closer to SL but are sort of isolated in a weird way. Also, I wouldn’t go north of Layton.

You could also go to the south end of the SL Valley; Sandy, Draper, Riverton, etc. I’ve known people who lived down there and they loved it. Do not go south of Draper tho. That’s Utah Valley and it’s not the friendliest place in the state. Plus the commute into SL to work is worse from that end of the valley than it is from up north here.

There are lots of good shopping centers, malls, etc spread all over the area with lots of restaurants right along with them so anywhere you live you’ll have access to that sort of thing. Outdoor activities are accessible from everywhere also. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to ski, hike, fish, camp, or whatever you won’t have to go to far to get to it.

You shouldn’t have trouble finding a nice house for $ 250,000. There are some neighborhoods that would be more but not that many. Considering the real estate situation you shouldn’t have any trouble at all.
